The white golf belt originated back in the early 70’s mostly with the European players of the time, this look helped the other articles of clothes stand out more and give the players a little brighter look. Many ask why a white belt is so important to the game of golf and the honest answer is because fashion is a huge part of golf. “Look good play good” Tom Watson once stated talking about how he felt on the golf course when he thought his outfit was a good one. Golf is a game of superstition. Brown and black is a big zero, same with blue and black. Since those two rules exist it was very difficult to wear a black or brown belt at all times. This is when the white golf belt got introduced to the game of golf. The white golf belt allowed the players to wear pants and shirts of just about every color and it would still match and the superstition would not be there. For several years from the 80’s to the late 90’s the white belt was not “in” anymore. Black golf shoes came into style allowing the white belt to be not needed as much, but as many people know golf is a very classy sport so light simple colors are the colors that make your outfit good. This being said the black shoes that were “in” for several years quickly got replaced again by other type of shoes that brought back the classic white golf belt. As the years went by the white belt went from just a belt, to a statement. Belt buckles with players names or what college they had played for before turning pro. The brand type was also a huge deal in today’s world compared to past years. A player that could be sponsored by Adidas, Nike, Puma or any other brand could be paid thousands of dollars just to wrap this white belt around their waste. Would you love your white belt for thousands of dollars? Another factor of the white belt and fashion in golf is how your body looks in the gear. when worn with white trousers and a white shirt, a white belt keeps the silhouette unbroken and is thus slimming. If you were to wear a black or a brown belt with white trousers and a light-colored shirt, the belt would graphically bisect the silhouette, cutting you in half, so to speak. This is no fashion crime, but it does emphasize your waistline, which is generally not a good thing. Similarly, a white belt can bridge the divide between a white shirt and patterned trousers with an element of white. As I stated before golf is a sport that fashion means a lot, and if your mindset is on an outfit that you don’t like your golf game will get affected. As years go by and golf grows even more into fashion you start to see belts of various colors to fit to the players outfit. You see the younger generation of players like Rickie Fowler wearing the orange, red, and blue colors. This statement shows a sign of bravery and the want to stand out and be introduced to the world. These patterns would be nothing without the introduction and the remerging of the white golf belt. This belt introduced the world of golf to a more bright style and a statement that tells the world that golfers are not ashamed of the sport.
